Knowledge on soil erosion and conservation is crucial for food security, environmental health, and sustainable land management. Soil erosion can lead to decreased crop yields, water pollution, and habitat loss, while conservation practices help maintain soil health and productivity. The book covers both theoretical and practical aspects of soil erosion and conservation.
The book begins by providing basic information, such as soil, climate, farming activities etc., pertaining to the dry zone of Sri Lanka. Then it explains theoretical aspects of the subject such as erosivity, erodibility, landscape etc., and theoretical modeling to visualize the conservation process.
The book will attract geographers, ecologists, hydrologists and soil conservationists. University lecturers, students, researchers and implementers will find interest in these pages and utilize the content to prepare their development plans and study and lecture materials. The author brings up many new findings and recommends that the book is made available in all university and school libraries, especially in Asian countries.

Dr P.B. Dharmasena graduated from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, where he studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. He earned a Master’s in Agricultural Engineering in 1982 from the same university. He obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Soil Science from the Agricultural University of Norway in 1983. He specialized in Soil Erosion and Conservation of Dry Zone Soils and obtained his doctoral degree in 1992 from, again, the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Dr Dharmasena worked in the Department of Agriculture, Sri Lanka for around 30 years as a researcher on soil and water management. He conducted research on village tank hydrology, soil conservation, conservation farming, rainwater harvesting, groundwater hydrology, traditional farming, and ecological agriculture. He has published more than 80 publications, and since his retirement in 2006, he has worked as a consultant in various UN Agencies, the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka, and other NGOs. He has served as a visiting lecturer since 2013 at the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka.

  • "This book [highlights] comprehensive and sequential issues on how soil erosion takes place and [how] it could be reduced by conservation measures. The author […] describes these well using his field experience in Sri Lanka and with his theoretical background in simulation and predicting these processes. Going through the 11 chapters, the author very clearly shows that arresting soil erosion needs the advancement of knowledge and practical implications to provide location-specific recommendations and shows the reader how those could be achieved for a given location."
