Bridging the gap from lab to clinic in regenerative dentistry.
Regenerative dentistry represents a significant shift in oral healthcare, moving beyond traditional repairs toward genuine biological healing. This learning companion provides a crucial overview of this rapidly evolving field, merging advances in stem cell technology, biomaterials science, and tissue engineering. It offers a detailed examination of the molecular and cellular mechanisms behind dental regeneration, scaffold-based treatments, and the ongoing clinical challenges of implementing these innovations for patients. With a strong focus on interdisciplinary perspectives—including digital dentistry and artificial intelligence—this text is an essential resource for clinicians, researchers, and academics seeking to understand and influence the future of dental medicine.

Mihnea Ioan Nicolescu has a double degree in Dentistry and Medicine, as well as a Specialist Degree as an Oral-Maxillo-Facial Surgeon. Currently, he is an Associate Professor and the Head of the Histology Division at the Faculty of Dentistry, “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, Romania. He is also a Scientific Researcher at the “Victor Babeș” National Institute of Pathology, Romania and a Visiting Lecturer at King’s College London, UK, where he graduated top of his class with an MSc in Regenerative Dentistry. A pioneer in his field, he was part of the research team that discovered and characterized a new human interstitial cell type—the Telocyte. His publication record includes over 50 articles and book chapters. His primary research focuses on elucidating the regenerative mechanisms of salivary gland stem cells and translating fundamental knowledge into clinical solutions. He also established the first Regenerative Dentistry module for students in Romania.
