The work of a super-sleuth, this book places every story and every sentence of Joyce’s Dubliners under a microscope, leaving no word unturned. It investigates every bit of evidence, direct and circumstantial, and invents a whole new analytical approach to show how Joyce manipulates his readers into believing his narrators’ fictions, while the reality is hidden in plain sight. The book is essential for any serious reader of Dubliners. It solves mysteries that have eluded Joycean scholars, but also contrives to be a guide for the general reader. Indeed, for anyone who reads this book, Dubliners will never be the same again.

For 30 years, Dr Peter van de Kamp has led the Dubliners seminars of the International James Joyce Summer School in Dublin. He has published extensively on Irish literature, and has taught at the University of Leiden, the Netherlands, and at University College Dublin, where he was a Newman Fellow. He has served as Visiting Professor at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and now teaches at Munster Technological University, Ireland. This is his 19th book.

  • “Both close-up in its linguistic analyses and wide-ranging in the scope of its cultural and historical observations, Whodunits in Dubliners is a tour de force that has the potential to inspire much future scholarship on Joyce’s groundbreaking collection of short stories.”
    - José Lanters Professor of English, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
  • "Whodunits in Dubliners manages the almost inconceivable: it presents genuinely new readings of each of Joyce’s short stories.
    - Van de Kamp continues the tradition of Margot Norris’ Suspicious Readings of Joyce’s Dubliners with detective readings. Whodunits deserves to be a classic for Joyceans, both scholars and general readers. This book is truly original, exemplary in its fastidious research, and—perhaps rare for a critical text—tremendous fun in its own Joycean asides and innuendo." Neil Murphy
