The English Language and Anglo-American Culture: Its Impact on Spanish Language and Society explores the effects of globalisation on Spanish language and society. It analyses the impact of the English language and Anglo-American culture on Spanish language and culture.

This book compiles four different studies that provide evidence of the increasingly pervasive presence of English in Spanish daily life.

The areas covered include: analyses of shop windows from different shopping centres in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, which display Christmas greetings in English, rather than Spanish; exploration of some of the most frequently used techniques to translate the titles of Anglo-American films; a study of the use of anglicisms in the Spanish edition of the film magazine Cahiers du Cinema; research on the attitudes of a sample of Spanish students towards English; reflection on the emergence of a certain sense of identity towards English and Anglo-American culture among Spaniards; and some activities that invite reflection on the issues dealt with throughout the book.

Carmen Luján García is a lecturer at the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, where she teaches EFL. Her main field of research is sociolinguistics, though she has also worked on other fields such as the use of new technologies in English language teaching. She has published books including: La lengua inglesa en Canarias: Usos y Actitudes (Cabildo de Gran Canaria, 2003); La globalización y el inglés en la sociedad española (EAE Publishing, 2012); and textbooks including: English, Technology and Telecommunications (co-authored with Soraya García Sánchez; ECU, 2010), and English for Geographers (ECU, 2010). Some of her notable papers published in international journals are: “English ‘Invasion’ in Spain: An Analysis of Toys Leaflets Addressed to Young Children” in English Today, vol. 27: 3–9 (2011) and “The Impact of English on Spanish Daily Life: Some Pedagogical Implications” in the Nordic Journal of English Studies, vol. 11: 1–21 (2012).

  • "This book makes a useful contribution to current research in the field of applied linguistics. The volume is well-structured and clearly written. The author uses
    - up-to-date literature and includes recent data. The analyses carried out are correct and the results give satisfactory answers to the research questions proposed in the chapters. Luján-García’s work is also valuable for her critical comments and strong claims about the role of English and English language teaching in the present era of globalisation. This text should be of interest to researchers working in this discipline, students of applied linguistic courses and teachers of English at all educational levels as well as to anyone interested in the impact of English and Anglo-American culture on Spanish language and society." - Eliecer Crespo-Fernandez, RESLA 26 (2013), 505-509.
