This book tells the stories of non-native English teachers working transnationally. Through fears, tensions, and triumphs, it explores their transformation—likened to a butterfly’s metamorphosis—as critical moments shape their evolving sense of selves in a borderless existence.

This book, motivated by the author’s personal experience of working abroad, tells the stories of non-native English language teachers working transnationally. Driven by various reasons, they set off to roam the global landscapes in their pursuit of equity: through the fears, tensions, and triumphs that define their borderless existence. The book explores their transformation in transnational “third spaces”, likening it to the butterfly’s metamorphosis. The book reveals how critical moments shape their evolving sense of selves and play a role in their continuous becomings as “someone else besides”. This book serves as a valuable source of reflection for researchers, educators, students, and policymakers committed to supporting expatriate educators worldwide.

  • "The book has clear implications for teacher education programs to move beyond narrow technical training and instead foster dispositions of critical interculturality, ethical responsibility, and openness to hybridity […] a clearly and logically written work that advances current debates about language, identity, and language pedagogy. It will be of great interest to researchers, teacher educators, and practitioners who wish to critically reflect on their roles in a world where linguistic and cultural borders are increasingly porous."
    - Rod Neilsen, Associate Professor in TESOL, Deakin University, Australia
