Combining biography with analysis, this book addresses several audiences: readers interested in the history of early Victorian England, those interested in early women historians, and feminists. Agnes and Eliza Strickand pioneered archival research in the Lives of the Queens of England (1840-48) and other books about English and Scottish royalty. Agnes became a celebrity. Although the reclusive Eliza did not allow her name to appear as a co-author, she contributed controversial lives of “Bloody Mary” (Mary Tudor) and of Henrietta Maria, Charles I’s French wife. Agnes and Eliza soon became unfashionable. More attention was paid to books by the sisters who had emigrated to Canada, Susanna Moodie and Catharine Parr Traill. Revisiting Agnes and Eliza, feminist historians recently argued for the importance of the English Stricklands. They offered a female alternative to male Whig historiography, exemplified by Agnes’ well-researched life of Mary Beatrice of Modena, wife and widow of James II.

David M. Fahey is Professor Emeritus of History at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, USA. Best known for his publications about the temperance movement and the alcoholic drinks trade, he recently began writing about Victorian historians. In 2025 he published a book, Three Victorian Historians: Hallam, Buckle, Gardiner, and an article about a forgotten woman historian, Bertha Meriton (Cordery) Gardiner, which appeared in the Australasian Journal of Victorian Studies. His current research focuses on what Guizot, a nineteenth-century French historian, wrote about the English Revolution of the 1600s.
