After introducing the history and range of alternative retirement communities, this book turns to an in-depth case study, exploring one age-restricted senior village, Rio Verde, near Phoenix, Arizona. Chapters explore: what gives these retirees meaning in their later years? What activities do they seek? What conflicts emerge and how are they resolved? In a community offering no assisted living arrangements, what health provisions are available? Which sort of governance structures ensure success? How does this community differ from The Villages, a much larger, well-known retirement magnet in Florida? The final chapter considers the future; how will environmental damage to the Southwestern US—extreme heat, water shortages—affect retirement communities? As age disparities grow—from 50s to 90s—how will the needs of both younger and older residents be met? What policies should be put in place to ensure the future viability of communities like Rio Verde?
