The Strong Vrancea Earthquakes Threatening Bucharest

Mircea Radulian, Constantin Ionescu, Andrei Bala

Bucharest is Europe's most vulnerable capital to earthquakes. Distant seismic events cause major damage and loss of life in the city. This volume gathers research on their impact, covering all aspects of hazard and risk assessment, from source to disaster management solutions.

The impact of earthquakes on society and especially on large urban agglomerations is of the greatest interest both for specialists and the general public. The effects can be overwhelming and cause true collapse in daily life across an entire region or country. An example is Bucharest, capital of Romania, which suffers enormously from earthquakes. The earthquakes generated in the Vrancea seismic nest at intermediate depths (60 – 180 km) far away from the city cause major damage and loss of life in Bucharest several times each century. For this reason, Bucharest is currently considered to be the most vulnerable capital in Europe to seismic waves. This volume brings together a multitude of research works regarding the impact of Vrancea earthquakes on the city. All aspects considered essential for hazard and risk assessment are taken into account: source characterization, wave propagation from focus to the site, local site response, vulnerability and risk aspects together with some disaster management solutions. The book responds to the increased interest from graduate students, research scientists in seismology/geophysics, civil engineers, decision makers and the general public on seismic risk in large cities. By reviewing the main recent advances in seismological research, it provides an excellent starting point for new approaches and research applied to growing communities in big and resilient cities.

Dr Mircea Radulian is a senior researcher at the National Institute for Earth Physics (NIEP), Măgurele, Romania and member of the Romanian Academy. He is Associate Professor at the Doctoral School of Physics, University of Bucharest (Faculty of Physics). He is involved in numerous committees, and scientific programmes at national and international level.

Dr Constantin Ionescu is senior researcher at the National Institute for Earth Physics, Măgurele, Romania. At present he is the general manager of the National Institute for Earth Physics (NIEP) (since 2011). As a recognition of professional prestige, note the numerous awards obtained at international competitions and the Romanian Academy award for the earthquake Early Warning system in 2005.

Dr Andrei Bala is a senior research geophysicist, holds a PhD in Physics at the Faculty of Physics, University of Bucharest and has worked at NIEP for 45 years. His current research interests are microzonation and in situ seismic measurements in Bucharest City and the metropolitan area, earthquake mechanisms and tectonic models in Romania.
