This multi-disciplinary book is written by a student of history who morphed into an artist, a teacher of drawing and painting and a research scientist. The author’s painting and teaching experiences prompted multiple questions for which currently available sources had no answer. Working with experts on the psychology of visual perception and the computer modelling of brain systems, he embarked on an investigation of how artists use their eyes when drawing and painting. It was not long before his interests broadened into asking how brains mediate skill and creativity in all areas. Topics explored include the strengths and weaknesses of existing artistic practices, origins of modernism in painting, semantic confusions, the science/art debate, pros and cons of so-called rules and laws, and the meaning of the words ‘insight’ and ‘inspiration’, with examples of how these ideas relate to the realms of art, science and everyday life.

After studying history at Oxford University, UK, Francis Pratt became a freelance artist. He studied painting at the Academic Community of Wilno University in London and the Bath Academy of Art, acquiring a teaching diploma at Bristol University School of Education, all UK. He taught colour courses and gave talks at art schools and art departments at all levels from Foundation to Postgraduate. There followed two key appointments at the University of Stirling, UK, first as Tom Cottrell Memorial Fellow (as an artist) and then as Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Psychology (as a scientist studying the acquisition and use of visually acquired information). He founded the Painting School of Montmiral as a testbed for his ideas on encouraging personal expression and creativity in students at all levels. He has exhibited paintings internationally, spoken at international conferences and seminars, published in leading academic books, journals and art magazines and masterminded multidisciplinary events.

  • "It's rare to find a book that communes with the artist's soul and stimulates the scientist's mind. Francis has managed to create a work that resonates on multiple levels - a true revolution in thought."
    - Heidi Anderson, LCSW, PsyD, Life and Empowerment Coach, Cambridge, USA
  • "Francis Pratt offers new ways of thinking about creativity in all domains that are grounded in a lifetime of in-depth research into the dynamics of how the brain mediates artistic skills. His ability to expand our understanding of a subject that has been studied and written about throughout history is a major feat."
    - Sarah Elliott, MFA Professor of Studio Art at the University of New Hampshire, USA
