From white supremacists to Islamists, and from Trumpists to climate activists, an intense struggle is unfolding over the social imaginary of the West. At stake is nothing less than the meaning of democracy, identity, and belonging in a rapidly changing world. This book explores the central fault lines of our time: the end of truth in an era of disinformation; the rage of identity politics; the nation-state as a contested battleground; emerging tribal sentiments and the daunting task of governing deep differences.
The author dissects these tensions with sociological precision, revealing how they unsettle established institutions while fueling an urgent search for new imagination. He argues for a renewed narrative grounded in social reciprocity and a passionate commitment to the rule of law. These principles can provide a foundation for democratic life amidst fragmentation. This is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand identity politics, polarization, and the fragile search for common ground in the twenty-first century.
