Maria Kostakeva

In the postmodern ironic music of composer Bojidar Spassov, old and new times, and cultural traditions emerge like carnival masks. This book is the first monograph on this paradoxical multicultural artist and the first attempt to shed light on the contemporary music of Bulgaria.

“Irony, a major aesthetic attitude in 20th century music, ceases to be irony if seriously discussed. I play with the myth, inventing it myself and using it only as an object of interpretation.”

This thought of the German-Bulgarian composer Bojidar Spassov sounds like a proclamation of the idea of postmodern irony that pervades all his work. Old and new times, cultural and national traditions, and archaic and modern sensibilities emerge like carnival masks through the ironic prism of his multifaceted music. The present book is the first monograph on this artist – a paradoxical multinational and multicultural phenomenon who developed in three geographical areas and three national cultures: Bulgarian, where he grew up; Russian, where his professional personality was formed; and Western European, where he found his own way among the countless aesthetic and compositional trends. This is also the first attempt to shed some light on a culture that is little known to the English reader – the contemporary music of Bulgaria.

Maria Kostakeva is a doctor habilitatus in musicology and has taught at the Universities of Bochum (Germany), Hamburg (Germany), Düsseldorf (Germany), Sofia (Bulgaria) and Plovdiv (Bulgaria). • "An ambitious endeavour of in-depth analytical research of the creative work of the prominent Bulgarian – German (and indeed global) composer of the 20th – 21st century Bojidar Spassov. […] [The author] has been in the privileged position of being simultaneously Spassov’s partner in life, hence the unique opportunity for a most insightful observation over the whole length of his creative journey; on the other hand, she is an objective, analytically minded musicologist, able and motivated to dissect the features of his work to the minutest detail. These qualities of hers as a scholar and writer have made the book – the focus of our attention, a very informative source of knowledge for both musical performers and theoreticians. It offers an in-depth and multi-faceted analysis of the highlights of Spassov’s work from different periods of his life, putting them into the context of the most significant socio-historical processes and events of the 20th century, whose effects are still felt, and will be felt for decades to come."
