This book describes and compares the basic principles of Christianity with the fundamental concepts of quantum physics. It compares conceptual models for quantum particle interaction and the Trinitarian theology of Christianity. The book follows the scientific method of proposing a model, testing its validity as far as possible, then applying it. A simple theoretical tool-kit, with well-defined terms and rules, is presented for the study of Christian theology. The book challenges some popular misconceptions about Christian belief. The tool-kit provides a framework for an open dialogue between Christianity and other belief systems. This tool-kit has been used by the author as a basis for courses in both academia and local churches. It is offered to practitioners in both these areas as a workable teaching resource. It is also offered to those, with or without a religious belief, to explore spirituality in the context of an understanding of a relationship between science and religion.

Revd Dr John Emmett holds a degree in Physics and a PhD in Nuclear Power Physics from Imperial College London, UK. He worked in industry validating and developing computer models for the operation of nuclear power reactors. He left to become a Methodist minister with charge of churches in the Bristol area. He took an MA in Theology and Ministry at Wesley College, validated by the University of Bristol, UK. He was invited to become Director of Studies and tutor at Wesley College, Bristol. He was a member of the Faith and Order committee of the Methodist and United Reformed Church (URC) churches and the Methodist representative on national Church of England-URC conversations. He has presented several papers at UK and European conferences on science and religion.

  • "John Emmett writes with the precision of a physicist and the care and diligence of a faithful theologian. He takes an original idea of his, tried and tested in a series of conference presentations, and plots a course for it through the minefields of trinitarian formulations. Readers who follow his exploration will be stimulated by both a sense of the paradoxes of contemporary physics, and the possibility that these might enrich our sense of the mystery of God."
    - Dr Christopher Southgate, Professor of Christian Theodicy, University of Exeter, UK
  • "Grounded in the practical experience of pastoral ministry and informed by professional expertise in both physics and theology, John Emmett patiently introduces his readers to relational and probabilistic models of contemporary quantum physics and of the traditional Christian doctrine of God. The result is both a successful exercise in Christian apologetics, and a timely challenge for Christians to have a faith that is both critical and orthodox."
    - Revd Dr Richard Clutterbuck, Research Fellow, Wesley House, Cambridge, UK
