This book introduces key ideas in quantum and classical optics, guiding readers through both fundamental principles and advanced topics. Designed for graduate students, researchers, and curious readers with a scientific background, it explains complex systems in a clear and approachable way. The first part focuses on the foundations of quantum optics, covering topics like light-matter interactions, entanglement, and systems with unusual symmetry properties. Later chapters explore cutting-edge subjects not usually found in textbooks, such as quantum engines and super-resolution imaging techniques that work without fluorescent labels. These chapters highlight how light can be used to study and control matter at the smallest scales, from individual atoms to nanoscale structures. Throughout the book, mathematical details are presented carefully, with references for deeper study. By combining clarity with depth, this book invites readers to explore the fascinating world of optical physics and its role in today’s scientific frontiers.

Yacob Ben-Aryeh is Professor Emeritus of Physics at the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion), where he previously served as Associate Professor (1976-1987) and Full Professor (from 1988). His expertise includes spectroscopy, quantum mechanics, and quantum and classical optics. He is a Fellow at the Institute of Physics and a member of the Optical Society of America.
In the early years of his research, he studied stellar gases at high temperatures and served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer (JQSRT). He later focused on quantum optics, investigating the properties of squeezed states, photon statistics and non-classical states, Michelson interferometers, phase operators, amplitude squeezing, intrinsic bistability, and quantum separability and entanglement. His investigations in classical optics include super-resolution imaging with microspheres related to the effects of evanescent waves and those of hot spots.
Professor Yacob Ben-Aryeh has authored approximately 250 peer-reviewed publications, some of which directly inform the research presented in the present book.
