San Joaquin Kit Foxes and Solar Farms

Coexistence of an Endangered Species and Renewable Energy
Brian Cypher, Erica Kelly

Endangered San Joaquin kit foxes are losing habitat to solar farms. However, due to key conservation measures, the foxes are colonizing the farms and thriving. This book presents research detailing the fortuitous coexistence between kit foxes and solar energy.

Photovoltaic solar farms are proliferating rapidly within the range of the endangered San Joaquin kit fox in central California. The farms result in the loss of large areas of natural habitat. However, because of their adaptability, kit foxes are colonizing the farms and the survival, reproduction, and general ecology of the foxes using the farms is comparable to that of foxes in natural lands. The key to the compatibility of kit foxes and solar farms is the suite of conservation measures that is implemented before, during, and after construction of the facilities. This facilitated coexistence between kit foxes and solar farms also creates conservation opportunities, particularly when solar farms are constructed in lower quality habitats. This book presents the results of work conducted by almost two dozen researchers that details the fortuitous relationship between San Joaquin kit foxes and solar farms.

Brian Cypher and Erica Kelly are researchers with the California State University-Stanislaus (USA), Endangered Species Recovery Program. Brian has been working with San Joaquin kit foxes for 35 years and Erica has worked with this species for 15 years. This work has included multiple research projects on solar farms. Between Brian and Erica, they have produced over 100 peer-reviewed articles and technical reports on San Joaquin kit foxes. Brian also is the author of the book The San Joaquin Kit Fox: Biology, Ecology, and Conservation of an Endangered Species and a co-editor of the book Urban Carnivores.
