Corrosion takes place when a material interacts with its surroundings, resulting in its deterioration. This occurrence is typically described qualitatively, emphasizing a material’s immunity, resistance, vulnerability, or pronounced vulnerability to corrosion, rather than measuring it as a design attribute like other properties.
The field of biomaterials is of great significance to humanity, as it affects not only elderly individuals in need of biomedical implants to improve their quality of life, but also disadvantaged individuals who have suffered from congenital heart disease since birth.
This book serves as a link between implant specialists and corrosion researchers. It explores fundamental corrosion principles, encompassing its definition, causes, effects, and economic ramifications, as well as various forms, manifestations, and control methods. Additionally, it examines different types of corrosion inhibitors and approaches for evaluating corrosion.
The discourse covers the diverse categories and roles of bodily fluids, highlighting substances such as perspiration, tears, urine, uterine secretions, saliva, and Ringer’s solutions. Furthermore, it examines the corrosion risks associated with metallic biomaterials, including SS 316 L, SS 18/8, 18 K gold, 22 K gold, Ni-Cr alloy, and Ni-Ti alloy, in relation to their interaction with bodily fluids. Certain alloys are suggested for specific uses, while alternative alloys may be favored in other scenarios.
