Comparative Translation Assessment

Quantifying Quality
Ljuba Tarvi

This book presents a daring hypothesis: quantity and quality are two sides of one coin. Using a novel Token Equivalence Method, it focuses on what is preserved in translation, proving that somewhere in the deep layer of everything, quality is the meaning of quantity.

This book is an edited PhD thesis (2004) which, albeit not published commercially, kept on being Googled. The reason might be a combination of the daring hypothesis – quantity/quality, like energy/matter or signifier/signified, are two sides of one coin – substantiated with a purely statistical and user-friendly Token Equivalence Method (TEM). The novelty of the TEM is that it allows for what has been preserved in translation instead of discussing what has been distorted. The fact that a mere number of the original tokens kept in translation are utterly congruent with the emotive evaluation by conventional criticism is proof that Freud, Feynman and Chomsky are right: somewhere in the unreachable deep layer of everything, quality/content is the meaning of quantity/form.

Ljuba Tarvi is a Russian-born Helsinki-based philologist, whose life has embraced two countries, two professions, and three universities. A language instructor by first education, for many years she taught English at the University of Novosibirsk, her native city in Siberia. In Finland, having obtained an MA degree in Russian language and literature from the University of Helsinki, she was offered to continue education, which entailed a PhD degree, professorship at Tallinn University, Estonia, multiple publications on Translation studies, Nabokov studies, Russian literature, and two books (third in progress) on correlating the surface forms of verbal art with their deep layer by quantifying verbal signs, verbal emotions and verbal genesis.
