This book offers a critically informed and concise contribution to the general theme of artisanal maritime fishing in a wide-ranging chronology (from the Middle Ages to the present). It includes contributions from various disciplinary areas (History, Museology, Biology, Geography and Geology) and case studies from diverse countries. The set of analyses that make it up is the result of a main objective: the dissemination of the activity material/immaterial heritage and preservation of its collective memory in a context of international collaboration. It covers key issues that discussed fisheries and fishing communities in an integrative perspective linking past, present and future socioenvironmental challenges.

Maria Rosário Bastos holds a 1st degree in History, an MA in Medieval History (Porto) and a PhD from Aberta University, Portugal. In 2009, she was awarded with the A. de Almeida Fernandes – Grand Prize for Medieval History for her PhD.

Olegário Pereira holds a 1st degree in History, an MA in Medieval and Renaissance History (UPorto, Portugal) and a PhD in Environmental Sciences from the Multidisciplinary Environmental Program of the Rio de Janeiro State University (PPGMA-UERJ, Brazil).

Sérgio Lira holds a 1st degree in History and an MA in Medieval History (UPorto). He obtained his PhD in Museum Studies (University of Leicester, UK).

João Viegas is a historian with over twenty years in academia, with an expertise that spans history and management. He holds a BA with Honours in History and a Minor in Art and Heritage from Aberta University, and an MRes from the University of Portsmouth, UK.
