The story told by Ginger, a doll molded from clay, is an excellent tool for promoting environmental education and raising awareness about the importance of soil. In an educational way, Ginger uses accessible language and gives voice and visibility to many issues that go unnoticed under our feet. Her narratives show soils as complex and dynamic systems, with interrelated physical, chemical and biological characteristics, and also highlight that soil is much more than “earth”, as many call it, – it is memory, sustenance and history. In this fascinating journey into the world of soils, Ginger shows that it is great fun when science meets adventure, and environmental education becomes a lifelong experience. I hope this invitation inspires you on this journey, to look at the ground you walk on with new eyes and to value this finite and threatened natural resource.
